The Tropico Demo has finally been released. You can get it from Gamespot HERE. If you have a dial up, don't bother as it is 172 MB and it would take you a week. My suggestion is don't even bother with the demo and just go buy the game. It really is worth the dough...

May 22, 2001

Sorry I haven't updated in so long. Things have been crazy in the Johnson home!! Haven't even had time to play Tropico, which really should tell you something. I don't have an update today, but I will be putting one together for tomorrow -- including some user-created maps!! In the meantime, if you would like to create your own scenarios, you need to download the Tropico Editor file available in the Downloads Section. Mercator and Lord Corwin have done a great job adding additional info to the editor text files, and combining them into one Word document.

May 15, 2001

The Tropico Patch v1.02 is now available in the Download Section. I have also posted file for the Map Editor. Enjoy!!

May 14, 2001

The Tropico Patch v1.02 should be released today. I almost had it in my grasp, but my stupid email program won't allow me to get attachments with the exe extension. I was able however, to extract the text files that went with the patch and the editor. Here is what the new patch includes:

* Enabled editor (for full instructions, as well as two necessary utilities, please check out out the tropico editor file, which should be available on-line as tedit102.exe)

* Added programmable hot keys for quick jumps to map locations, people, and almanac pages. The number keys on the keyboard (0 through 9) can be programmed. (Instructions on how included in .txt file)

* Airports should now be built about 35% faster (including ground clearing, etc.) Other large buildings should now be built about 10% faster...

* If the world bank forces low wages on you, the prior wages will now be remembered and restored, if and when the wage restrictions are lifted, PROVIDED that you haven't changed the building's wages yourself in the meantime.

* Fishing wharfs can no longer be placed in such a way as to trap the resulting fishing boats.

* Cleaned up a few obscure crash bugs

The editor looks pretty cool. I have added the txt files to the Downloads Section if anyone is interested in reading about the editor and its capabilities. But as I said, the patch is completed and I wouldn't be surprised if it is on Take2's or Poptop's site today sometime.

In case you were curious, Tropico debuted in the number five spot for PC games for the week of April 22-28. Very respectable, especially considering it was released mid-week. Let's hope those figures continue to be strong, and we might get a Tropico expansion!

You can now download the Tropico patch from the Downloads Section. Instructions for installing are included.

I am considering running a Tropico contest. The idea would be to post a randomly-generated map. Tropico players would then be able to submit to me their saved games and/or screenshots of the final results and I could compare the results and post winners. The drawback would be that the cheats would be enabled, so you would sort of be "On your honor". If you think this is a good idea, please email me and let me know, and I will move forward.

May 8, 2001

I finally got around to updating the Dictator Profiles Page found in the strategy section. I noticed that there were four or five qualities that were initially in the game but didn't make the final cut. Next on the list is to update the Edicts page....

I am putting together a strategy guide of user tips and hints. If you have a strategy tip, please email it to me. Of course, I will give you credit.

I also fixed the link for the bonus scenarios -- Peg Leg's Cove and Club Tropico (in the Maps Section). Some people were having trouble downloading the .mp2 files (the computer thinks they are music files or mpeg files), so I saved them as zip files. You can right-click on the link and select Save Target as... or some browsers will start a download file automatically when you click on the link. You will need to unzip the files and save the mp2 file to your maps directory in your Tropico directory on your hard drive. If you have problems with this, please email me!

Sorry no updates lately. We have had a busy home with parents, in-laws and other family in town to see the baby. If you missed it, Poptop issued the first patch for Tropico. You can find it HERE.

Congratulations Phil Steinmeyer!! Phil and his wife and had a boy, named Daniel, Thursday, April 26th. He weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces, and according to Phil, "both baby and mother are both happy and healthy." Some nice Tropican cigars for everyone!!

Phil also let me know that he expects to release the map editor in about three weeks. Should be a lot of fun!! If you haven't picked up your game yet, Best Buy's latest advertisement offers the game at $27.99, and includes the Bonus CD and a Bonus CD with music from the game. As for a demo, I hear it is finished and will be included on Demo CDs from games magazines. Due to its large size, it will not be available for download on the Internet. If you are waiting for the demo, my advice is to plunk down the $30 and buy the game. It will be money well spent!!

I am putting together a strategy guide of user tips. If you have a strategy tip, please email it to me. Of course, I will give you credit.

April 30, 2001

I have updated the Scenarios/Maps Section. You can see each of the eight scenarios included with the game, as well as the two scenarios on the bonus CD. To download the new maps, click on the name of the scenario.

Strategy Tip of the Day: First and foremost, you need income. Look for mineral deposits near your town and if there is one, build a mine right away. Also, look at the farms you get when you start the game. If they are capable of handling a cash crop (sugar, tobacco, coffee). If they can, change to this type of farm right away. If they can't, you need to build one of these cash-crop farms.

April 27, 2001

I learned of a few Cheats. You can see them in the strategy section. I also added a Scenarios/Maps Section. I will be including information on the seven scenarios included with the game, as well as the two scenarios that were on the Bonus CD. So far, there is info on a few scenarios. Also, when the editing tools are released, I will post user-created maps.

Strategy Tip of the Day: "G" shows the terrain grid. "C" shows a large-scale grid, 4 squares to a side. Shift-"P" shows a polygon grid. This is useful when placing buildings as the flatter the land, the faster the building will be built.

If you are having problems installing the game, or you are looking for more tips and hints on gameplay and strategy, head over to the Tropico Forums. Lots of good information over there.

April 26, 2001

I haven't had a chance to play Tropico yet. Babbage's jacked up the price to $50 after I had pre-ordered it at $40 and I didn't feel like paying that. It wasn't the $10 but it was the principle of the matter. So I am boycotting Babbage's -- I will never buy a game there again.

New feature: I will be adding the Strategy Tip of the Day, at least until I run out of tips! Today's tip: Do not build your mines on the mineral deposits. Place it to the side of your deposits. If the mine is directly on top of the deposit, you will not be able to mine any minerals.

If you are having problems installing the game, or you are looking for more tips and hints on gameplay and strategy, head over to the Tropico Forums. Lots of good information over there.

April 25, 2001

Many people have reported receiving the game today. If there are no updates for awhile, it is because I am too busy playing Tropico! Check out an interesting interview with Phil Steinmeyer at VoodooExtreme.

If you haven't already, check out Postcards from Tropico. Very creative and entertaining!!

April 24, 2001

Be sure to pre-order Tropico so you can get your Bonus CD. You can check out the Strategy Section to see the strategy guide contained on the CD. I also have been trying to update the Profiles section of the strategy guide. Background and Rise to Power are updated, and I am working on the qualities and flaws segment.

Gathering of Developers announced today that Tropico has shipped nationwide. Below is the full release:

A New Political Presence Emerges in the Caribbean… and It’s You!

PopTop Software's and GodGames' Tropico Ships to Stores Nationwide

Dallas, TX, April 24, 2001 - Today UN officials recognized the political situation brewing in the small Caribbean nation of Tropicoä and have issued a global watch. A new dictator, instated by game developer PopTop Software and high-end computer and videogame publisher GodGames, both subsidiaries of Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ: TTWO), has taken over the island and is implementing new rule.

More details are being revealed as Tropico, a 3D building, strategy/simulation PC game, ships to stores nationwide today. Tropico invites desktop dictators to develop a remote Caribbean island, overseeing all building and resource management, as well as political, military and population aspects. Distributed by Jack of All Games, another Take-Two subsidiary, Tropico is available for the PC for a suggested retail price of $39.99 and is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB. A Mac version of Tropico will be released in May.

"Tropico has a unique, tongue-in-cheek humor that is very appealing to gamers," said Phil Steinmeyer, president and lead programmer of PopTop Software. "Its simple interface allows for an easy learning curve for casual gamers, and at the same time its many layered modes of gameplay will challenge hardcore gamers."

In Tropico, players take on the role of a newly instated dictator of a remote Caribbean island and are challenged to build a path of progress for a nation mired in poverty, civil unrest and infighting. Based on their economic vision, gamers build hotels, mines, factories, and over 80 other structures. Diplomacy and politics factor heavily in Tropico, as players must pacify various internal factions and external threats. If the island's growth is well planned, the player will have plenty of money to buy the peoples' favor and ensure prosperity. If growth is poorly planned and the economy falters, the population may revolt, forcing the player to institute martial law.

"The simulation game genre is incredibly popular right now," said Harry Miller, president of GodGames. "PopTop has done an incredible job incorporating the engrossing gameplay and 'virtual voyeurism' that lend to the popularity of sim games, and combining it with a unique storyline and tropical setting to create a distinctive and groundbreaking title."

Tropico's Features Include:
  • Over 500 people of more than 45 different character types including peasants, the rich, military and clergy. All the characters' attitudes and actions are determined by their socio-economic status and personal biography, including educational level age, gender, intelligence and nationality.
  • Various internal and external political facets and activities that are at the discretion of the dictator. The three main facets to Tropico's internal politics are political popularity, uprisings and elections, while the United States and Russia serve as the two major external forces. Political activities include suppressing rebellion, maintaining political popularity and trading with foreign powers.
  • Extensive industries including manufacturing, mining, agriculture and tourism.
  • Resource management duties which give desktop dictators the ability to construct new buildings, set worker salaries, declare various edicts, manage labor and time, and grow and trade various food, minerals and crops.
  • More than 80 types of structures and environments from hotels and spas to banana groves and sugar plantations, to residential housing and ports and airports, with some rum distilleries and cigar factories thrown in for good measure!
Tropico is based on an improved version of PopTop's proprietary S3D engine allowing for highly detailed 3D graphics and renderings. The S3D engine was initially used in highly acclaimed Railroad Tycoon II. The engine will support hardware acceleration, variable resolution support from 640 x 480 up to 1600 x 1200 and variable color depth support from 8-bit to 32-bit color. Screenshots can be found at http://tropico.godgames.com.

Tropico's PC System Requirements:
  • Windows 95/98/2000/ME/NT4
  • 200 MHz CPU
  • 32 MB RAM
  • 820 MB Disk Space
  • CDROM
Tropico's Mac System Requirements:
  • System 7.5.3
  • 200MHz CPU
  • 64 MB RAM
  • 820 MB Disk Space
  • CDROM

I just came from the local Babbage's. They say the game was pushed back and won't be out until April 25th. As I was walking out the manager asked me if I wanted to play the demo. Knowing there is no demo out yet, I started to say no, but decided to see what he had to offer. He handed me a CD -- the Tropico Bonus CD! Cool... This is the Bonus CD that you get from EBWorld if you pre-order Tropico. It has a screensaver, a desktop theme, a couple of scenarios, a strategy guide, a bunch of articles from Franz Felsl and Phil Steinmeyer, a couple videos (including an in-depth interview with Phil) and a few other goodies. I will post some of these things for download in the coming days.

There is a new preview over at Quarter to Three. While the author gives Tropico a good review, he does state that "PopTop's Tropico ... is in some ways every bit as good as Railroad Tycoon II. But in some ways, it may turn out to be less compelling than Railroad Tycoon II, partly because it's a completely different style of game. My main concern with Tropico is that it may not have Railroad Tycoon II's nearly limitless replay value. Nevertheless, Tropico is still a deep rich game with a lot to recommend it."

April 22, 2001

I realize there have been very few updates in the last few days. My only excuse is that there really hasn't been much news to report! Other than a new preview that shows up on the Internet every day spouting the same old thing, there isn't much else. I can assure you though that the posts will increase when the game is actually out, which happens to be in approximately three days from today (in North America). I will try to post strategies, hints, tips, cheats, and anything else I can get my grubby hands on. I need to work on the strategy section especially. In the meantime, you can read yet another tired, old preview at Neoseeker.

April 16, 2001

I made a big update and somehow it didn't update. At any rate, I don't feel like doing it all over again, so I will just list five new previews for your Tropico delight: Computer Games Online PC Paradox Intelgamer Strategy Gaming Online Gamer Review

Every preview I have read is favorable to Tropico. If you are like me, you are tired of reading previews and are ready to play the game! While each of these five previews is worth a look, there is no groundbreaking new info (although there are some cool new screenies). At any rate, just over one more week of waiting before we can play the game!!

April 13, 2001

Thanks to Phil Steinmeyer, who responded to my inquiry on the map editor. This is what he had to say:
It's likely, but not guaranteed, that we'll release the editor in some form within a fairly short interval after the game's release (a couple weeks), probably as part of the first patch. We'll wait to see what, if any, problems crop up, and release a patch that includes editor tools.

We currently have no plans for an expansion, though that could change - if the game sells really well (as I expect it to - presales have jumped way up in the last couple weeks - the U.S. first printing was supposed to be 85,000, but they bumped it up to 125,000 at the last minute), it's quite possible that Take 2 management will be on the phone asking me to create something new to extend the franchise - I'm not sure how I'd handle that though, and again, we don't have any plans at the moment...

Right now - about half the office is doing stuff for Age of Wonders 2, me and Brent are doing follow-up Tropico stuff for international versions, Mac, etc., and Franz, Steve, and Guillermo are doing preliminary stuff for our next full original game.

April 12, 2001

As reported at VoodooExtreme, Phil Steinmeyer had the following to say about Gold Mastering:
Gold Mastering Tropico was more or less a cakewalk compared to GM'ing Railroad Tycoon 2. Not that it was easy - I was still working 16 hour days, but at least it wasn't 18 hour days. Tropico went out very solid - on the GM version, across about 25 testers and 200 tester man-hours we had only 2 crashes (one was a driver problem, I think). No broken functionality that I know of. (With Railroad Tycoon 2, we knew the multi-player was pretty shaky going out the door - it didn't get stable until version 1.03).

I've been spending this week helping get the foreign versions out, but that's going reasonably well, also.

Overall, I think the game has turned out really awesome - we've gotten great previews based on the beta build from about 3 or 4 weeks ago, but the final version is even better - more balanced, very stable, includes 8 scenarios (plus the awesome random-map generator), and just very nice all-around. Of course, we had a few things on our wish-list that didn't make it, but again, less so than with anything I've done in the past.

Now go out and buy the game!!! (or at least pre-order a copy - at www.ebworld.com you get a free bonus CD with all sorts of goodies with your pre-order).

One of the things missing from the initial release of the game is the Map Editor. Poptop Dave had this to say about the map editor:
Sorry, in the final days of going gold, it was decided that the implementation of the editor just wan't up to snuff yet, so it was disabled. We do want an editor available, so Phil hopes to release a patch later which will re-enable the editor. Hopefully it won't take long to get that patch ready, because I know that a lot of people want to be able to create and exchange maps. But for now, it's not in there.
If you had your heart set on winning G.O.D.'s dictator contest to be featured in the game, too bad...unless of course you are Oklahoma resident John Grant, who did win. Here is the release reported at Adrenaline Vault.
Local Claremore, OK resident John Grant will be featured as a character in the upcoming PC game, Tropico. Tropico is a 3D building sim that allows users to oversee all resources needed to develop a remote Caribbean island -- from cash, labor and time to food, minerals and crops. Grant entered and won the "You Rule" contest sponsored through developer PopTop and publisher GodGames. He will appear in the game as the dictator character, Palido Jaguar. Tropico has gone gold and will ship to stores nationwide on April 24.
You still have a chance to win a free game by visiting entering Poptop's "Create a Postcard" postcard. I am not very creative, but you can check out my sorry entry by clicking Here. Anyone that's wants me to post their entry, just email it to me. (Perhaps wait until after April 18th when the contest ends.)

A new Tropico preview can be found at IGN.com. ALso, in cased you missed this Preview, you need to read it. It's pretty entertaining.

April 11, 2001

GREAT NEWS!! It appears that Tropico has now officially GONE GOLD! Hurrah! It looks as though Tropico will ship April 24th. Only a few more short weeks of waiting... Below is the press release from Gathering of Developers.
El Presidenté,

As you know we have been monitoring the political situation in the Caribbean. The tiny island known as Tropico is ready for leadership. We have intercepted a message to the American press from the factions known as Pop Top Software and God Games, subsidiaries of Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ: TTWO).

The message is calling for the Americans to send their best leaders for consideration of the dictatorship of this new island nation. It seems that "Project Tropico" has reached a mission status of "Gold" and the Americans will be ready to ship the PC faction leaders on April 24th followed by the Mac faction leaders in May.

Pop Top and God Games hope to make Tropico a strong nation by installing dictators who can balance its economy, develop the countryside and build public opinion amongst island natives. These newly installed dictators can build more than 85 unique structures, each benefiting various factions on the Island.

Among the structures they can build are housing, schools, market places and clinics which will give them the ability to maintain a populous. Additionally, the new dictators will begin the construction of factories, mining facilities and tourist attractions like spas and hotels to ensure the islands prosperous economy.

The Americans also plan to give the newly installed dictators free reign of domestic and foreign policy. If the island's growth is well planned, the new dictators will have plenty of money to buy the peoples' favor and ensure prosperity. If growth is poorly planned and the economy falters, the population may revolt, forcing martial law.

April 10, 2001

Okay, I am back to semi-regular updates. If you devour all of the Tropico info you can sink your teeth into, head over to InsideMacGames for a new preview. There are 11 new screenshots, including the one below of a military base with tanks (just for you MrP!):

I think I am now caught up on the character profiles. I have added five new characters to the Characters Section. Is it just me, or does the farmer look remarkably similar to Ernie from Sesame Street? When the game is released in a few weeks, I hope to make this section much more in-depth.

I have moved all of March's news to the Archives Section. If you missed any of the interviews with Poptop's employees, visit this page.

Be sure to check the Poptop Website periodically. They are going to be announcing a new contest shortly.

April 9, 2001

Lots of exciting things to report. First, Tropico has (un)officially "Gone Gold"! I have it from a good source that the game is finished and has been burned onto a gold CD and sent to the publisher to be reproduced and packaged. Barring production problems, the game should hit the shelves by April 17th.

I will be back tomorrow with another update. I am learning to hold my newborn in the left arm and type with my right! It isn't as quick, but I am getting better. If you are so inclined, you can take a look at this Profiles Worksheet I created. I used Excel to create a spreadsheet that will quickly show you what various choices you have while establishing your dictator's profile. I am not sure what use it will be, other than give you a breakdown of the various combinations before you start playing. Something to toy with anyway!!

April 3, 2001

IT'S A GIRL!!

Sorry for lack of updates, but I have been busy becoming a father! My wife gave birth to a 6 lb. 15.5 ounce baby girl last night (April 2). It was quite the delivery....she was in labor for 20 hours (pushing hard for three hours) when they decided the baby just didn't want to come! So she had a C-Section. She is doing well, as is the baby (we don't have a name picked our for her yet...we were convinced it was a baby boy!). I will try to be back with regular updates as soon as things get back to normal.
